Mary Walker
Media or specialism: painter and tutor
Painter and tutor working in Watercolour and Oils. Mary also specialises in ancient methods of preparing pigments on gessoed wood and canvas.
“My work explores our response to landscape and how we each have a unique and distinctive experience of a place. This is sometimes called a ‘Spirit of Place’ where there can be a solid, physical aspect of a place containing monuments, trees, rivers or mountains and there is also an interpersonal aspect or presence of something happening in that place.”
In the early 1980s Mary studied oriental painting at Chateau de Plaige, near Autun, France – and helped direct the painting of frescos of a 3 story Himalayan temple in Burgundy. She lived in France from 1984 – 1992 exhibiting at ‘La Maison des Artists’ gallery during the 1990s. Several of her paintings are held by the St Claude city collection and she appeared in the 1996 television documentary FR3 ‘Route du Lapin’. On returning to England she obtained an M.A. in Fine Art and P.G.C.E. in adult education and taught Art and Life Drawing in Further Education. Mary received the Chester Municipal Charities, Award in Teaching in 2009 for ‘Art Therapy classes for Mental Health’ and ‘Brain Injury and Stroke Survivors’ for The Countess of Chester Hospital.
She exhibits occasionally around Cheshire and currently teaches Leisure Watercolour Courses at Caldy Valley, Boughton, Chester.
